Redesign of Shy, Low’s instrumental album “Hiraeth."
Hireath is the Welsh concept of homesickness for a time, era, or person that may not exist any longer. Old family photos evoke a sense of universal nostalgia without using words and are a key element of this redesign. I sourced and scanned many photos and textures to create this 7" record packaging and book.

HIREATH
"A homesickness or longing for a past time or place in one's life which cannot be returned to or may not have existed at all."
I gathered as many authentic and ambiguous family photos as possible that would resonate with anyone. I collected old photos, letters, and cards from a local thrift shop and cut out faces and other elements of each to represent the "something missing." These translated into polaroids that came with the book packaging. Users could keep it as a souvenir and replace it with their images.

THE BOOK
Each song title on Hiraeth is a non-English word that carries a similar sentiment to the word hiraeth, about nostalgia, hopelessness, longing, and more. This accordion book I crafted provides translations on one side on each page and a photo album on the other. Users can replace the custom polaroids with their own images and memories.
