Ligature is a weekend-long design symposium run entirely by University of Florida graphic design students. The weekend features talks and workshops with internationally recognized guest designers. This year we were honored to host Tad Carpenter and Meg Lewis as our guest designers and new friends.
This event has become a gathering for alums, designers from the community & beyond, and world-renowned artists who visit to share their insight into a rapidly changing industry.

A ligature is that tiny little connection you make between two letters to join them together. Some ligatures even look like a smile.
This year, Ligature's theme was celebrating the design connnections that make you smile.

I designed itinerary documents for the speakers that balance silly with professional by combining the playful event aesthetic with sleek typography.
CURATING THE GALLERY SPACE
A focal component of Ligature is the juried show, which attracts hundreds of designers, students, families, and alums.
Hali and I worked with an empty gallery, over 100 project submissions, and 35 accepted physical pieces. As Creative Directors, we had to curate the gallery space and ensure that the experience of the juried show also reflected the theme of the event. With the help of our classmates, we got to work, hand-painting the wordmark on the wall and using vinyl to decorate the space.
THE JURIED SHOW
The juried show was a huge success. One of the critical components that made Ligature 29 unique was the live screenprinting on tote bags and the pop-up shop our student organization curates to raise funds for our group! Ligature is a group effort, and we are so grateful to our volunteers who help make our vision a reality.
We applied our branding to the space using vinyl to attach our squiggles and shapes to the wall. We also added fun details to the event, like adding a small mechanical fish to swim around the voting bowl for the people's choice award. Details like that helped us translate our concept for Ligature into the experience.
LECTURES + WORKSHOPS
Another opportunity Ligature creates for students is to interact with and learn from renowned working designers. We curated and organized workshops and lectures for students to attend.
